Broken highways, lax safety measures and reckless driving contribute to Pakistan’s terrible road safety record. Passenger buses are often packed to the brim, and seat belts are usually not worn, meaning that high fatality rates in single-vehicle accidents are common.
In January, at least 40 people died when a bus fell off a bridge in southwestern Pakistan and burst into flames.
