NEW YORK — A 2-alarm fire broke out at a home in the Bronx on Friday, resulting in one death and one injured firefighter, according to the New York City Fire Department.
Authorities received a call about flames around 2:08 p.m. at a home located at 2533 Grand Ave. The fire reportedly started on the second floor and spread to the third floor of the home.
The fire left serious damage to the structure of the house, so it had to be completely evacuated and closed.
The flames caused one death and one firefighter suffered minor injuries as a result. The identity of the deceased was not made public.
The Department of Buildings (DOB) responded to the scene of the fire, where they found extensive fire damage to the three-story home.
The rear of the home suffered the most damage, according to the DOB report. During their inspection of the building, inspectors found that the single-family home had been illegally converted into a total of 17 single-room occupancy units, located on all levels of the building, including the basement and attic.
The American Red Cross has offered emergency relocation assistance to all residents who have been displaced by the fire.
The DOB continues to investigate at the fire scene.
