Heavy rain and strong winds caused a hill behind the cottage where the two were sleeping to collapse around 6 a.m. (local time), resulting in a mudslide that destroyed the house in Jatiluwih village. According to the newspaper The Sydney Morning Herald the couple was probably sleeping when things went wrong.
Electricity out
According to the Indonesian police, the couple had been offered to spend the night somewhere else the night before because the electricity had gone out and the weather was so bad, but the two did not think this was necessary.
Around 5:30 in the morning, the person who had offered the other place to sleep checked whether it was safe and decided that it was. Shortly afterwards the couple was killed by the mudslide. It was the only house hit by the mudslide, two vacant houses next door were unharmed. As far as we know, no other victims have been reported.
