The six-year-old was treated for dengue fever and was due to be discharged on the same day as the fatal accident.
According to local media, an employee at the hospital must have entered the lift and wheeled the girl on a stretcher behind him when the lift suddenly started moving.

According to local media, the girl must have been stuck for close to 30 minutes before she was rescued. The rescue team finally had to tear down part of the wall to free the girl.
A spokesperson for the hospital says that it is an external company that is responsible for the maintenance of the lifts. They have now sent a complaint to the company.
– Necessary healthcare was given during the incident, but unfortunately the patient died. The hospital’s management immediately notified the authorities and are now contributing information to the investigation, to ensure full transparency about this tragic incident, the statement says.

Alejandro Contreras Díaz, chief of the fire department in Playa del Carmen, says the girl was alive when they arrived at the scene.
– Her chest and face were pressed between the lift and the wall. The lungs and heart were crushed, and she also had injuries to her face, he says.
The fire chief says he has never experienced anything like it during his 16 years in the fire service.

The public prosecutor in Mexico states that one person was detained after the incident, and that work is now being done to find the cause of the accident.
The death is now being investigated by the police. The girl was laid to rest on 12 July.
