The tragic accident happened on the 16th kilometer of the D1 highway in the direction of Senec in Slovakia. The police said that a Mercedes was stopped in the right lane due to a breakdown, which was joined by a BMW after a while. When his driver got out, he was swept by another car. According to Slovak media, it was 43-year-old Marcelo, who was returning from vacation with his family and stopped at the first car to help a friend.
Marcelo’s family from Moravský Lieský was returning from a holiday in Bulgaria together with two friends on Sunday. They left their cars at the airport in Bratislava before the weekend and drove home afterwards. Marcel was driving a BMW, Marcel’s co-worker Tomáš and his partner were driving a Mercedes, writes the diary New Time.
Colleague Tomáš’s car broke down on the highway, so he called Marcel that it had a breakdown. They agreed to stop together. “Tomáš brought his Mercedes up to the guardrails in the third lane. Marcel also stopped. He immediately told his family, wife and children to get out of the car and stand in the field behind the guardrails so that they were not in the way,” Marcel’s father told Nový Čas newspaper.
Marcel was then hit by an Audi car on the highway in front of his family. “Now I don’t know if he went into the trunk or if he was on the side, but the oncoming car hit him in such a way that his spine was completely twisted,” Marcel’s father described.
A doctor happened to be driving past the scene of the accident, stopped and helped the seriously injured man. Then the emergency services arrived. Marcel’s injuries to his internal organs and pelvis required an immediate transfer by helicopter to a hospital in Bratislava. After providing emergency care, the doctors put him into artificial sleep.
“Despite the enormous efforts of our paramedics, unfortunately the man could not be saved and he succumbed to his injuries shortly after being transported,” she said, according to the website Noviny.sk police spokesperson Silvia Šimková. The police are still investigating the exact cause and circumstances of the accident.
