60 emergency services from the fire brigade, DLRG, water police and rescue service were deployed on Saturday afternoon (24 June) after the fire brigade control center received an emergency call at 5:15 p.m. about people floating in the Rhine near Himmelgeist.
From river kilometer 729, at Himmelgeist, an extensive search on the water and in the shore area was immediately initiated. Two helicopters supported the action. Three young men had been sucked out of the groynes into the Rhine by the current. One of the men was able to save himself at the last moment by holding on to a stone. The second person was rescued from the river Rhine by a rubber dinghy driver. The third person is still missing.
Paramedics attended to the 23- and 24-year-old men who were rescued. Current rescuers searched the affected Kribbe and the adjacent Kribbe intensively for the missing 22-year-old man. Despite an extensive search on the Rhine and near the banks, he was not found.
The fire brigade and the police again point out that bathing in the Rhine is life-threatening and is equivalent to a walk on the motorway. Dangerous whirlpools and currents often form on the cribben or groynes, as the gravel surfaces protruding into the water are called. There is also a strong current in the fairway. Even for experienced swimmers, swimming in the Rhine is life-threatening.
