This is Regency Transportation Ltd., which according to New York State Department of Transportation spokesman Joseph Morrissey, was classified as an “unacceptable operator.” In 2022, it had also not passed some inspections.
The accident occurred near the town of Wawayanda, Orange County, 45 miles northwest of New York City.
Two former teachers of the school are those who died in the accident
Gina Pellettiere (43), director of the school band, and Beatrice Ferrari (77), a retired teacher, died during the spectacular rollover. Other students remained in critical condition for a few days, but fortunately they left that condition.
The New York Department of Transportation noted that buses or vehicles with an out-of-service rate of 25% or more are rated “unacceptable.” Regency Transportation Ltd.’s rate was 33% in 2023, according to records.
“I saw blood everywhere”
“Then everyone started screaming,” he told the AP news agency. “The boy next to me was covered in blood. “I saw blood everywhere.”
He crawled out of the bus through a window, dazed but with only scratches and bruises. Once outside, he found his backpack, which had gone flying, and his missing shoe.
Investigations are expected to continue to determine the real origin of the accident.
