The Public Prosecution Service has demanded eight years in prison and TBS with compulsory treatment against the man who killed a 79-year-old man and 74-year-old woman on the Maasboulevard in Rotterdam during the World Port Days last year.
On September 2, 2023, the couple from Capelle aan den IJssel was hit late at night while crossing the road at a green light. According to the judge, 37-year-old Mark G. had smoked smoke that day and “teared through the city while drunk.” He ignored red traffic lights, drove about 80 to 100 kilometers within the built-up area and at the scene of the accident had a speed of 111 kilometers per hour, where 50 kilometers are allowed.
After the accident, Mark G.’s van was found several hundred meters away. The driver himself had run off. A day later, G. reported to the police and confessed. The Public Prosecution Service also demands a driving ban of ten years. According to the officer, G. has put his own interests above those of other “innocent, vulnerable road users”.
Another offense
Family members of the couple from Capelle aan den IJssel used their right to speak. “Every day is a fight,” the woman’s daughter said. A granddaughter talks about her grandfather’s birthday, a week before his death. “We said: ‘You are still so fit, you can easily live to be 100’. But we cannot know now, whether he would live to be 100, Mark. Because of you.”
G. says he cannot remember anything about the collision. “It was never my intention to take these people’s lives,” he says. He also doesn’t remember why he got into the car drunk. G. apologized in an earlier session. The man is also suspected of another accident on September 26, 2022. He also drove away there, but no one was injured.
