Peerumedu (Idukki) ∙ A housewife died when huge rocks and earth fell on top of her car which was stopped at a corner on the national highway. Somina (54), a resident of Upputhara, who was trapped inside the car, died. After 40 minutes after the accident, Somina was pulled out of the vehicle. Five people were injured in the accident.
Bibin (35), his wife Anushka (31), Aadhav (5), Lakshya (eight months) and Anushka’s mother Sheela (52), who are natives of Kattappana and police officers, were admitted to Peerumedu Taluk Hospital with injuries. The deceased Somina was a helper in Bibin-Anushka couple’s house. The accident happened around seven o’clock on Sunday night.
He was returning to Kattappana after visiting Panchalimedu, a tourist destination. Meanwhile, when the vehicle was stopped to give birth to the baby, rocks and soil from the mountain fell on top of the car.
After the accident, rescue operations were started under the leadership of the locals, but it became difficult to remove the rocks. Then the fire brigade and the police arrived and removed the boulders with the help of an earthmoving machine. Locals said that the reason for the landslide was heavy rain in the area where the accident happened in the evening.
