It was supposed to be an excursion in fantastic weather: During a hike in the Berchtesgadener Land there was a fatal accident on Friday afternoon (08/18/2023). Specifically – as the Berchtesgaden Police Inspectorate explains – a vacationer fell around 200 meters. The woman sustained fatal injuries. The officials explained that her husband had to watch the accident on the Hammerstielsteig in Bavaria. The 57-year-old from the Black Forest slipped on a paved path in the steep terrain and then fell down. There was then a large-scale deployment of numerous rescue workers around the scene of the accident. However, mountain rescuers, police and air rescue could no longer have helped the woman.
A fatal mountain accident also occurred in Bavaria at the end of July. A 57-year-old from Munich had set off alone by train for a mountain tour to the Brecherspitz in the Schliersee municipality. Because relatives then reported the man missing, a large contingent of rescue workers set off. In the end, however, a tragic discovery was made: the man could only be recovered dead.
Initial investigations at the time revealed that the man had fallen about 70 meters down steep, rocky terrain when descending from the summit via the east ridge. The hiker suffered such serious injuries that he could not be saved. Because the area was difficult to access, a police helicopter had to help with the rescue.
