[Updated at 11:48]The Lixinsha Bridge in Wanqingsha Town, Nansha District, Guangzhou City was hit by a boat early today (22nd), causing the bridge body to break and vehicles to fall off the bridge. The Guangzhou Maritime Search and Rescue Center reported that after preliminary investigation, four vehicles and one motorcycle were involved, two of which fell into the water and the other three fell onto the boat. At present, two people are dead, two people have been rescued, one crew member is slightly injured, and three others are missing. The cause of the accident is under investigation. CCTV News reported that the owner of the ship involved had been detained.
Jimu News quoted local residents as saying that a bus and a truck fell into the boat. The Guangzhou Salvage Bureau of the Ministry of Transport has sent divers and salvage boats to the scene for rescue. The Guangzhou Bus Group announced that one of its buses was passing through this section of the bridge when the accident occurred. The bus fell off the broken bridge deck. There was only one driver on board at the time. The condition of the driver is currently unknown.
The Nansha District News Center’s official Weibo “Guangzhou Nansha Release” stated that the incident occurred at about 5:30 this morning. An empty container barge was traveling from Nanhai, Foshan to Nansha, Guangzhou when it hit the Hongqili Channel. The piers of the Lixinsha Bridge caused the bridge deck to break.
The Nanhai Rescue Bureau of the Ministry of Transport launched an emergency response plan and organized 25 rescue workers and professional rescue equipment from Guangzhou and Shenzhen rescue bases to go to the scene.
