This article has been updated after more details became known.
The accident happened around 3 a.m. near Mühldorf am Inn, on the highway between the Austrian border and Munich. The German police conducted a check on this stretch of Autobahn, from which the driver of the van tried to escape.
Police gave chase, during which the driver of the van lost control. The bus carried 23 undocumented migrants, including children. Normally nine people can fit in this type of van, a Mercedes Vito.
Some politicians blame the police, but Bavaria’s Interior Minister, Joachim Herrmann, spoke of a smuggler who despises human life and has endangered others to save his own skin. The bus overturned during the chase. The driver survived the accident and was arrested.
The police report that a number of people were also injured, several of whom were seriously injured.
