During a press conference, police said they received a call at 5:10 a.m. from a young woman declaring that “her cousin was killing members of her family,” reports the BBC.
Two officers were dispatched to the Far Rockaway area. Arriving at the address indicated, they were attacked with a knife by a man who hit them in the neck and chest for the first agent and in the head for the second.
One of the officers pulled out his firearm and shot the suspect. Transported to hospital, the assailant died.

Other officers dispatched to the scene found an 11-year-old girl injured at the front of the home, which was on fire. She was taken to hospital but died from her injuries.
Emergency services later found the bodies of three other people inside the house: a 12-year-old boy, a 44-year-old woman and a man in his 30s. A 61-year-old woman was also taken to hospital with multiple knife wounds.
A kitchen knife was found at the scene.
The suspect, Courtney Gordon, 39, had previously been arrested for domestic violence in the Bronx.
