The victims had 13 minutes to get home. The police found their phones at the scene of the tragedy, with the navigation applications still on. It would have ended well if the 51-year-old car driver had not ignored the video and audio warnings announcing that a train was approaching.

The man sped up to get ahead of the freighter, but he didn’t have time. The locomotive hit the car and dragged it 200 meters along the railway until the mechanic managed to stop the tens of tons of wagons.

The accident happened at a railroad crossing on a national road, which should have had a barrier. There is a law that obliges the CFR Infrastrucură company to install, until 2020, barriers on all national roads where accidents occur frequently.
A study made public by the road company shows the enormous economic costs of a traffic accident: over one million euros for a lost life, almost 150 thousand euros for a seriously injured person and over 10 thousand for a minor one. Since the beginning of the year, 14 people died in accidents at railroad crossings and 25 were injured.
