Forty-one people died in a shipwreck carrying migrants off the coast of the Italian island of Lampedusa, Sky News reported in an urgent video.
And the Italian news agency said that four survivors of the accident told rescuers that they were on a boat that set off from Sfax in Tunisia and sank on its way to Italian shores.
The spokeswoman for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees in Italy, Chiara Cardoletti, announced that about 40 people were missing in the sinking of a migration boat off the small Italian island of Lampedusa.
Cardoletti confirmed this in a media statement, after Cardoletti wrote in a tweet to her on Twitter, confirming its content to the French Agency in a phone call, and said that among the missing was at least one newborn.
For his part, a spokesman for the International Organization for Migration, Flavio Di Giacomo, said that the boat that sailed from Tunisia was carrying migrants from Africa.
