41 people, including 3 children, were lost after their boat sank, which set off last week from the Tunisian “Sfax” with 45 migrants on board, according to a United Nations statement yesterday, quoting 4 survivors who were transferred to the Italian island of “Lampedusa”.
In a joint statement, the United Nations agencies for refugees and children, UNICEF and the International Organization for Migration, deplored the “terrible drowning that occurred on the night of Thursday, August 3 and Friday, August 4, in the Mediterranean.”
The statement added, “The boat, made of iron, overturned in stormy weather conditions, which increase the danger of crossing operations with these small iron boats, which are not even suitable for sailing.”
