Firefighters confirmed yesterday that they found no one trapped in the huge mound of rubble after a corner of the seven-storey apartment building collapsed, leaving the apartments exposed. Below, a cellar was partially buried under bricks and wood.
During the search for possible victims, firefighters used buckets, power tools and heavy equipment while Officials carefully monitored the parts of the building that remained standing.
“We are digging a tunnel into that pile of rubble as safely as possible,” FDNY Department Chief John Hodgens said yesterday. “Firefighters are currently in a dangerous position. We don’t know what caused this corner of this building to collapse. “We don’t know if any of that (remaining) will collapse.”
A 2020 inspection found cracked bricks and loose and damaged mortar on the facade of the building built in 1927, Department of Buildings (DOB) records show. Commissioner Jimmy Oddo said Monday that Repairs had begun, but no workers were there at the time of the collapse.
“I want to be clear: the unsafe conditions of a façade are not the same as those of an unsafe building,” Oddo said at a press conference. “While the property had seven unresolved violations, they were not structural”.
“Miraculously, no one was seriously injured in the partial building collapse at 1915 Billingsley Terrace. Looking at the scene and the surveillance footage, it could have been much worse. We waited anxiously as @FDNY members methodically walked through the pile of rubble,” wrote the Commissioner Laura Kavanagh Monday night.
