Tragedy in Spain: At least 95 dead – Fears of many missing –

The death toll across Spain from the DANA storm continues to rise. The Emergency Service of the Community of Valencia has just confirmed 92 deaths in that autonomous community alone.

The tragedy has hit Paiporta particularly hard. This town located about ten kilometers from the capital has become a ruined and isolated scene. According to the mayor, 40 residents have died there, six of them elderly people who were in a nursing home.

In addition, in Castilla-La Mancha there have been two deaths so far, an 88-year-old woman in Mira (Cuenca) and another in Letur (Albacete). And in Andalusia, a 71-year-old man who had been rescued the previous night from the floods in Álora (Malaga) died on Wednesday.

In addition to the human tragedy, the extent of the damage will lead to the declaration of a “disaster zone” at the next Council of Ministers. In the Community of Valencia, rail connections around the city of Valencia have been suspended and most state roads are closed.

After the meeting of the Crisis Committee, the Minister of Territorial Policy addressed a double request to the citizens. To those who are in the affected areas, not to leave their homes. And, secondly, to avoid road travel. Initiatives are emerging from almost every corner of Spain to help those affected by DANA.

Marousakis: “Spain is experiencing something similar to Thessaly”

Clearchos Marousakis proceeded to analyze the phenomenon that Spain is experiencing. The well-known meteorologist compared the conditions prevailing in the Iberian peninsula to what we experienced in our country with the bad weather Daniel.

“The residents of eastern Spain are experiencing a phenomenon similar to what we experienced last year in Thessaly. An extensive area of high pressure has spread over central Europe, this is an atmospheric mountain that means it prevents bad weather from moving from west to east. At the same time, any waves of bad weather that have formed in the southern parts of this barometric high remain trapped for several hours and several days.”the well-known meteorologist initially reported.

He then analyzed the phenomenon by emphasizing: “Storm waves interact for several hours with sea areas, with warm sea surfaces, it is difficult to identify the areas that will release the largest volume of water. A cold mass and a warm mass are coming. They collide with each other and in combination with the sea create the extreme phenomena that hit Spain”.

“It poured as much water as it pours all year in Athens”

“Meteorological stations showed in the Siva region, west of Valencia, 450 millimeters, which means 450 tons of water per hectare. In Valencia they gave about 180-200 millimeters. We are talking about an extreme situation. In one year, these millimeters of water fall in Athens. From satellite measurements, it is estimated that around 200-300 mm of rain fell in parts of Spain. These systems are trapped and eddy over warm sea areas, resulting in a feedback loop, so we’ll continue to see phenomena over the next few days.”he noted.

Resident of Valencia: “Right now they are taking out bodies, one after the other”

Panagiotis Tsigaras, a resident of Valencia, spoke to Nikos Evagelatos and Live News about the Apocalypse scenes he experienced:

“Valencia is currently split in two. I live in the northern suburbs, where we were saved. The southern suburbs are the ones that have suffered the most damage. Half the city, around 700 thousand inhabitants are trapped. All the roads are closed, we can’t go to the southern suburbs. There are Police and Army there, as at the moment they are taking out corpses, one behind the other”, said the resident in shock and added:

“It is as if 3 meters of water reached the city of Thessaloniki. It’s incredible what happened. I don’t think anything like this has been done in Europe before. All barriers were broken. In Valencia there are small rivers, where they extracted everything and returned to the city, in the southern part.
