Four children have died while fishing in the Canadian province of Quebec. They were fishing with nets in the evening near the St. Lawrence River and were surprised by the sudden rise of the water. They were swept away by the river and drowned.

The children were all older than 10 years, the emergency services report. They were part of an 11-person group fishing along the shore at Portneuf-sur-Mer about 340 miles northeast of Montreal.

Six of them were saved. One man is still missing. He is being sought with helicopters, among other things. The group probably rode down to the river on quad bikes and stood on a small peninsula when the water began to rise. They were probably fishing for capelin, a small fish that is especially active after sunset.

It is not yet clear whether the group comes from Portneuf-sur-Mer, a village with about 600 inhabitants. “Everyone is touched by what happened. It is the first time that something like this has happened,” says the mayor.
