The tragic death of a 16-year-old boy occurred on Saturday night in this housing estate in Piekary Śląskie. The boy was first found by his father.
– Unconscious in the bathtub. He was evacuated to a safe place before the fire brigade arrived, and there the emergency medical team provided him with first qualified medical aid – says Capt. Robert Gubała, Municipal Headquarters of the State Fire Service in Piekary Śląskie.
Unfortunately, despite being carried out of the bathroom, where the gas heater was located, and an hour of resuscitation, the teenager could not be saved. Firefighters constantly remind us that reaction time is crucial during carbon monoxide leakage and a detector helps in this. This is also confirmed by doctors.

– When the sensor goes off, we definitely have time to go out and air the apartment, open the window. In most cases, people who are equipped with carbon monoxide sensors, even when this sensor goes off and they come to the hospital terrified, their carboxyhemoglobin concentration, which is a marker of carbon monoxide poisoning, is low and nothing happens to them – says prof. dr hab. n. med. Natalia Pawlas, Toxicology Department, WSS nr 5 in Sosnowiec.
Carbon monoxide poisoning is most common in the winter, but you should also be careful in the summer. This is because the chimney flues above the roof overheat, which can lead to a backflow of exhaust gases.
