In Johannesburg, at least 52 people died in the night from Wednesday to Thursday due to a large fire in an apartment building. At least 43 others were injured.
All the injured were taken to hospital by emergency services. It is not clear if they are in critical condition. According to South African media, many people have smoke inhalation.
The death toll may still rise. Among the deceased is also a child, nothing else is known about the identity of the victims.
The fire broke out at around 1:30 a.m. in a five-storey building in Johannesburg’s business district. Footage shows flames shooting out of the windows.
The fire brigade is trying to extinguish the fire with several vehicles. According to the authorities, the extinguishing activities are almost complete. The cause of the fire is not yet known.
