Tragedy in India: Ten dead and 15 injured in an explosion at a fireworks factory – 2024-02-20 05:19:51

Ten people were killed and 15 others injured in an explosion at a fireworks factory in southern India, local police said. The blast was caused by a fire inside the factory in Tamil Nadu state, police spokesman Feroze Khan Abdullah said.

“Ten workers were killed by the explosion. Five of the 15 injured are being treated” he said, clarifying that the cause of the fire has not been clarified so far. Explosions are a common occurrence in fireworks and sparkler industries.

Fireworks are very popular in India and people use them in weddings and also in religious festivals like Diwali. Many factories, however, do not comply with basic safety rules.

Eleven workers were killed in New Delhi on Friday when a fire broke out at a paint factory following an explosion. Another eight people were killed and 80 injured this month in the central Indian state of Madhya Pradesh after an explosion at another fireworks factory sparked a massive fire.

One of the worst fires in the history of India occurred in 1985 in the state of Haryana, in a school. At that time, 442 people were killed, 258 of whom were children.
