Four people have died in a helicopter collision on the famed Gold Coast on Australia’s east coast. including an English couple.
The accident occurred near Sea World Park. The crashed helicopters are said to belong to the theme park and have been used for guided tours.
Among the victims are the park’s chief pilot and a 36-year-old Australian. A 10-year-old boy is still in danger of dying, a nine-year-old boy and a 33-year-old woman are seriously injured.
According to initial reports, one of the helicopters had just taken off and the other was about to land when the rotors collided. A helicopter then crashed and landed upside down on a sandbar in the middle of the sea. The other managed to land, but the windshield broke.
Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese tweeted: “Australia is shocked to hear news of the horrific and tragic helicopter crash over the Gold Coast.”
It was initially unclear how exactly the collision could have occurred. The Australian Transport Safety Authority has launched an investigation. A large contingent of police and paramedics was deployed.
