Giza Prepares for Major Traffic Changes as Metro Construction Begins
Starting February 1, 2025, Giza will witness meaningful traffic disruptions as construction begins on the “14 – Giza” metro station, part of the aspiring fourth line tunnel project. The General Management of Giza Traffic has announced a thorough plan to manage the expected traffic densities and ensure smooth flow during the six-year construction period.
The project will require the total closure of Al-Ahram Street between Giza Square and Abbas Bridge, specifically in front of Al-Ramd Hospital. This closure, set to begin at 12:05 AM on February 1,2025,will impact thousands of commuters daily. The Giza metal bridge house, which leads to Abbas and Al-Bahr Street, will also be removed to accommodate the construction.
To mitigate the disruption, the General Administration of Giza Traffic has outlined specific traffic diversions:
- Vehicles coming from Manial and Abbas Bridge heading towards Giza Square will be redirected to Murad Street.
- Vehicles from Manial and Abbas Bridge aiming for Great Bahr Street will use the updated rotational opening direction towards the Abbas tunnel.
- Vehicles traveling from the Giza metal bridge and Giza Square towards Abbas Bridge and Manial will be directed to the beginning of the Abbas Bridge route.
The administration has emphasized its commitment to ensuring the safety and security of citizens during this period.”The General Administration of Giza Traffic will set the necessary traffic services and coordinate with the implementing companies to provide technical assistance and equipment indicating the presence of works in the region,” officials stated.
This project is part of Egypt’s broader efforts to modernize its transportation infrastructure, following the recent opening of the Giza mega station, which aims to alleviate pressure on Cairo’s central Ramses Railway Station.
Below is a summary of the key traffic changes:
| Route | Diversion |
|———————————-|——————————————————————————|
| Manial/Abbas Bridge → Giza Square | Redirected to murad Street |
| Manial/Abbas bridge → Great Bahr | Updated rotational opening towards Abbas tunnel |
| Giza metal bridge → Abbas Bridge | Entry left to the beginning leading to Abbas Bridge and Manial |
As Giza braces for these changes, commuters are advised to plan their routes carefully and stay updated on traffic announcements. The long-term benefits of the metro project, including reduced congestion and improved connectivity, are expected to outweigh the temporary inconveniences.
