Traffic jams over Ascension Day

FThe ADAC expects a lot of traffic jams for the coming long weekend over Ascension Day. Since travel is no longer restricted by Corona, it will probably be significantly busier on the motorways than in the two previous years. In addition, there are more than 1000 construction sites across Germany, which are also slowing down traffic.

According to ADAC, the greatest risk of traffic jams is on trunk roads to and from the coast, on the A 1 from Cologne via Bremen and Hamburg to Lübeck, on the A 2 from Berlin via Hanover to Dortmund and on the A 9 from Munich to Nuremberg. The metropolitan areas of Hamburg, Berlin, Cologne, Frankfurt am Main and Stuttgart are also particularly affected. In Bavaria, the traffic experts expect a high risk of traffic jams, especially in the greater Munich area and on the A 99 ring road. There should also be waiting times on the A6 between Heilbronn and Nuremberg, on the A 8 from Stuttgart via Munich to Salzburg, on the A 9 Munich-Nuremberg and on the A 95 and federal highway 2 from Munich to Garmisch-Partenkirchen. This also applies to the A 93 from the Inntal triangle in the direction of Kufstein.

Since Ascension Day is also a public holiday in Austria and Switzerland, it should also be crowded in the Alpine region. The access roads to popular excursion regions are particularly affected: In Austria, the Carinthian lakes, the Salzkammergut, Lake Neusiedl and the recreation areas of the Swiss cantons of Ticino and Valais. Slightly longer journey times should also be planned for on the Tauern, Fernpass, Brenner, Rheintal and Gotthard routes. According to the ADAC, however, the stays at the borders when entering and leaving the country should not exceed 30 minutes.

But there is also good news: after weeks of traffic jams due to construction work on a bridge in Wolgast in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, motorists are again free to travel to the island of Usedom. As a spokesman for the state office for road construction said, the only access to the island is now two-lane again. In addition, after a full night’s closure between the Volkspark junction and the Hamburg-Nordwest triangle, the A7 motorway is free again.

The ADAC expects the first major traffic jams on Wednesday afternoon between 1 p.m. and 7 p.m., since Friday is officially a school-free day in the federal states of Berlin, Bremen, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Lower Saxony, Saxony, Schleswig-Holstein and Thuringia. In Hamburg and Saxony-Anhalt, the one-week vacation ends.

On Friday it will be relatively quiet on the streets. The return traffic is expected for Sunday.
