Disaster landing in 2020 for the traffic of the territory’s second aerial platform. Nice Côte d’Azur airport for 2020 will have 4.58 million passengers in 2020, three times less than in 2019 (14.485 million).

Among the causes of this spectacular fall is the collapse of business and congress tourism, a major supplier of passengers for the airport thanks to international congresses, fairs and festivals in Cannes, Nice and Monaco which attract tens of thousands of participants. from the four corners of the world, leisure tourism too, because nearly 50% of traffic in Nice is international and this proportion is reflected in the profile of tourists frequenting the riviera.

A situation which allows the Nice airport to have lines to the United States or China.

There are also economic activities, notably with the presence of foreign firms in Sophia Antipolis, in the Grasse basin or Monaco, which mainly work internationally.

To be reassured, the decrease according to the president of the management board of the Airports of the Côte d’Azur Franck Goldanel is less than that recorded by European airports of comparable size.

For the moment, the hoped-for recovery is not yet there and the airport has had to close Terminal 1 for reasons of economy to concentrate traffic on Terminal 1 (the oldest) to concentrate activity on the terminal 2 (newer).

Terminal 1 could resume service this summer depending on the upturn in traffic, which is often stronger at this time of year.

The company has signed a three-year long-term partial activity agreement which provides for employees to work part-time, on average at 60%, with a pay cut of around 18%, and the possibility of returning to 100% in case of activity.

Note that although the company employs 600 people, 8,000 jobs are activated on the platform in the various companies established (companies, service providers, shops, etc.).

The Terminal 2 extension project, which should have started this year, has been put back in time because it should allow better reception of passengers, the two terminals having arrived in 2019 at the limit of their capacity.
