UPPER Austria/LINZ-LAND DISTRICT. In 2023, there were 73 traffic deaths in Upper Austria. The sad leader is the Linz-Land district with nine deaths.
In 2023, Upper Austria will record the second lowest figure since records began and the largest decline in traffic deaths in Austria. With seven fewer road users having fatal accidents than in the previous year, Upper Austria achieved the highest absolute decline, ahead of Vienna (five) and Vorarlberg (four), the state of ÖO reports. With 73 traffic deaths, this is below the five-year average of 80 deaths per year. “The statistics confirm a low level of fatal accidents in road traffic. Nevertheless, every road user who dies in an accident is simply one too many. There is a lot of suffering and pain behind the 73 fatal accidents,” said State Councilor for Infrastructure and Mobility Günther Steinkellner.
Look into the districts
The comparison of the 18 administrative districts shows that the most traffic deaths in 2023 will occur in the districts of Linz-Land (nine), Grieskirchen/Eferding (eight), Ried and Braunau (seven each). The fewest traffic deaths were recorded last year in Steyr-Stadt (zero), Gmunden (one) and Linz-Stadt (two).
Most common causes of accidents
The number of motorcyclists (plus seven), pedestrians (plus three) and small truck drivers (plus two) who were fatally injured has increased. The number of cyclists killed (minus seven) and moped drivers (minus five) fell the most. In almost a third of traffic accidents, improper speed (29 percent) was the main cause of the accident, followed by carelessness/distraction (27 percent) and overtaking (twelve percent).
Roads significantly safer
“Around five decades ago, over 400 fatal accidents occurred every year, around six times as many as this year. The statistics clearly show what has been done in recent decades to improve safety on our local roads. By raising awareness, we want to make a contribution to strengthening road safety sustainably and in the long term,” emphasizes State Councilor Steinkellner.
