Traffic Control Issues: Pregnant Woman and Midwife Delayed, Ambulance Stopped at Barrier

A heavily pregnant woman and a midwife who were traveling together to the OLVG East were stopped yesterday by traffic controllers at one of the city’s intersections. This is evident from the daily overview of incidents that alderman Melanie van der Horst (Traffic) sent tonight.

The midwife called 911 while she was on her way. She got the police control room on the phone and asked if the dispatcher could arrange for the barrier to open for her. The dispatcher said that was fine.

“On arrival, the traffic controllers report that this promise has not been passed on and that they cannot let the midwife through,” the overview of the municipality says. “The obstetrician manages to convince the traffic controllers of the urgent nature of this journey, after which the traffic controllers open the barrier. With a few minutes delay, the obstetrician can continue her journey to the OLVG.”

The municipality has agreed with the umbrella organization of midwives that the barriers will open for them during urgent journeys. In that case, midwives must call the control room. The control room then informs the control room of Enforcement and Supervision of the municipality that the barriers must be opened.

“The latter does not seem to have gone well here,” writes Van der Horst. “As a backup, traffic controllers can directly request THOR’s control room to open the barriers. That happened here.” She states that further research is needed into the mutual communication between the control rooms.

Second incident

It wasn’t the only incident yesterday. An ambulance that was on its way to a report without an emergency, did not initially pass the barrier at the Weesperstraat towards the Mr. Fisherman’s Square. This happened because the access sticker behind the windscreen was not recognized by the camera. It caused a delay of half a minute.

Several incidents have already taken place around the cuts. For example, on July 7, due to the flower boxes placed by the municipality, motorists were unable to make room for an ambulance at the Mr. Visserplein, so they started riding on sidewalks and cycle paths. On Saturday, July 1, there were four incidents, including a police car that had to drive about a kilometer across the central reservation, the cycle path and against traffic.
