Traffic chaos, school cancellations and full emergency rooms in Lower Franconia

VonJonas Keck, Susanne Schmitt

On Tuesday morning, the region’s roads are as smooth as glass. The police report numerous accidents and the emergency room of the Würzburg University Hospital is very crowded.

Slippery roads caused rush hour traffic chaos, school cancellations and a full emergency room in Lower Franconia on Tuesday morning. “It is smooth as glass in places in the administrative district. We have had numerous accidents and it is not over yet,” a spokesman for the Lower Franconian police headquarters said early in the morning on request. in much of the region face-to-face lessons have been cancelled. Firefighters and rescue services repeatedly had to respond to emergencies. And there was a lot of activity in the surgical emergency department of the Würzburg University Hospital (UKW).

Usage is currently “extreme,” university hospital spokesman Stefan Dreising said in the morning. From 6:30 to 9:00, 25 patients presented to the surgical emergency department of the UKW following black ice accidents. In addition to hand and forearm injuries, severe hip and femoral neck fractures sometimes also need to be treated.

More than 100 missions for the helpers of the integrated control center in Würzburg

According to the integrated control center in Würzburg, it only counted from midnight to 8.15 am more than 100 deployments by fire and rescue service due to black ice in the districts of Würzburg, Kitzingen and Main-Spessart – from bicycle falls to serious car accidents.

For example, around 6:30 a.m., a truck slid into a gas station at a rest area on the A3 near Würzburg. At first, there were fears that a fuel pump had been damaged, according to firefighter Alfred Schubert. A large contingent of firefighters has been alerted. On the spot, however, the go-ahead was triggered: the truck had only hit the Adblue column. Nobody got hurt.

Numerous school cancellations in the region

Due to the difficult weather conditions, face-to-face lessons in schools throughout the Main-Spessart district are canceled this Tuesday. This was announced by the district office. Assistance for students who still come to school is guaranteed. According to the respective district offices, distance learning takes place in the districts of Bad Kissingen and Rhön-Grabfeld.

Even in the city and district of Würzburg, the streets and sidewalks were icy in many places early in the morning, which is why schools are sometimes suspended. “In some places it is not possible to reach the school without accidents. Here the children can stay at home,” says the notification system for lesson cancellations due to bad weather. Emergency care is underway in schools, but not all teachers can reach their schools. “Schools provide information through their parent information system.”

There are also restrictions on local public transport. A spokeswoman for Würzburg Supply and Transport GmbH (WVV) said in the morning that there could be delays on Würzburg’s bus lines, especially at higher altitudes such as at the Waldfriedhof or the Frankenwarte. Just before 11am, the transport company announced that the situation had normalized. “City buses are running according to schedule again,” the spokeswoman said. According to the district office, bus traffic in the Main-Spessart district is severely restricted overall.

The German Weather Service (DWD) warns of a persistent ice sheet in Northern Franconia and Northern Upper Palatinate “sometimes until morning”. In some areas it could even rain again and as a result new black ice could form.
