There were 35,000 spectators at yesterday’s concert by the Arctic Monkeys for Rock in Rome, at the Ippodromo delle Capannelle. Many, many. At no other live show there were so many. But maybe there were too many.
Not for problems of safety or space under the stage, but for those related to traffic around the location. If the queues of cars and mopeds at the time of arrival had been budgeted for by the organizers – who had in fact invited the public to go to the place in advance – and were managed more or less without problems, everything turned out to be more complex at the exit. despite the fact that there were as many as six car parks located around the area.
But it wasn’t so much the presence of the spaces as the total absence of flow management. In fact, on social networks, many have complained about a wait of over two hours to be able to enter the street on the way back, underlining how the first and most popular car park that you come across on the Appia Nuova coming from the Raccordo – where parking for the whole evening costs ten euros as opposed to the five that you pay in the one near the main entrance, and there is only dirt, never asphalt – if only one exit, moreover without personnel assigned to the outflow. Left to their own devices, the spectators had to arrange themselves in line as best they could, ending up going out even after two in the morning, that is two and a half hours after the close of the concert.
But it is a problem, this of the single exit taken by storm, which to a lesser extent also affects the other, smaller areas of the area, and to which, among other things, must be added the traffic that punctually arises at the crossroads between via Appia Nuova and via delle Capannelle. There, the 35,000 paying guests felt like everyone. And it wasn’t even the first time: in 2022, among others, Blanco’s fans had the same fate, namely that of remaining “closed” for two hours in the large dirt parking lot of the Hippodrome, and then queuing up on the ‘Appia Nuova waiting to go home.
During the presentation of this year’s edition of Rock in Rome, the organizers had made it known that they had worked on the viability and that they had also made special trains available to be able to return to Termini. Those are not missing. But two months later, for those arriving with their own means, getting out of Capannelle is still an adventure.
