Traditional Oktoberfest in Bavaria is canceled this year NOW

The Oktoberfest in the German state of Bavaria, also known as Wiesn, will not take place this year due to the corona crisis. Prime Minister of Bavaria Markus Söder thinks the risk is too great, he says in a Tuesday morning press conference.

“It is simply not possible to keep sufficient distance and to wear masks on the Wiesn (meadows, especially the Theresienwiese in Munich, ed.),” Says Söder.

Also related folk festivals will not take place in the German state this year. Söder previously announced that organizations of alternative, smaller October festivals would not be given permission. The Bavarian government wants to try to compensate entrepreneurs who miss out on a lot of income due to the cancellation of the traditional party.

Munich Mayor Dieter Reiter is not afraid that he will have to pay damages, because he says he is not legally obliged to let the event go through. He does state that the cancellation is not only emotional, but also economical. The city of Munich converts over 1 billion euros during the Oktoberfest.

The Oktoberfest in Bavaria is scheduled to take place between September 19 and October 4 this year.
