Traditional music made by and about women comes to La Mutant from the hand of Marala

VALENCIA, 3 May. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Valencian-Catalan-Balearic trio Marala will present at La Mutant next Thursday their debut album ‘A trenc d’alba’, in which they explore “traditional music with ancestral roots” focusing on women through the voice and instruments of its members, Selma Bruna, Clara Fiol and Sandra Monfort.

Its members, all of them singers and composers, come from different parts of the linguistic territory: Selma Bruna (Sant Cugat del Vallès, 1994) came to perform alongside musicians such as Lucas Delgado or Clara Peya; Clara Fiol (Palma, 1995), also a poet, was one of the artists with the most projection of the Balearic Islands; and Sandra Monfort (Pedreguer, 1992) from Alicante accumulated experience as a guitarist in theater and dance projects.

The three decided to unite their talents and created Marala, shaping a style that “draws from both the present and the origins of Mediterranean music, and which runs through the entire album that will be presented next Thursday, May 6 (7:30 pm). live on La Mutant “.

Recognized with the 2020 Enderrock Prize for the best revelation album, ‘A trenc d’alba’ is a proposal “luminous and groundbreaking, oriented towards the songs of the earth but impregnated with a feminist and renovating spirit”.

Beyond their voices, the women “are present in all the songs on the album, with lyrics that speak of vindication and change and that, on occasions, are inspired by the work of different poets”.

“This is a job that breathes with feminine breaths,” said the members of Marala. “Our songs are almost all our own, and are inspired by the musics of the Catalan-speaking culture. Poems to music by current artists, revisions of cants de batre, Sephardic tunes and war laments that are interspersed with fresh explanations and, at the same time , involved with feminism, heritage care or social criticism “.

In their concerts, the trio’s proximity music is combined with guitars and traditional percussion instruments that pass through the hands of all of them, and that are sometimes silenced so that the voices sound without further ornaments. Musicians such as Aleix Tobías, Xarim Aresté, Xavi Lozano or Faneka have collaborated on the album, while Roger Martínez (percussion) and Xavi Lozano himself (flutes) are in charge of accompanying Bruna, Fiol and Monfort on the stage.
