Time for the final preparations for the exhibitors at the Nantes Christmas market. The chalets, located on Place Royale and Place du Commerce, open their doors this Thursday, November 23. The official inauguration will take place on Friday, November 24.
134 exhibitors are present until Saturday, December 30, to sell clothes, board games, jewelry and other Christmas gift ideas, not forgetting the traditional mulled wine.
And for many, it’s the most important time of the year. “We’re betting everything on Christmas. It represents 70% of my turnover.”, confides Bruno, a traveling jewelry seller. He paid almost 8,000 euros to install his displays in his chalet. “Last year, we managed to achieve relatively decent sales figures. It’s not crazy, but compared to what we can see elsewhere, we’re doing well in Nantes.”
Fewer customers due to inflation?
Will customers be there this year? According to a study published by Cofidis at the beginning of November, the French will spend on average 19 euros less this year for Christmas. A slight drop in the budget, which Marie, an old-fashioned mulled wine seller, does not hope to suffer. “We have not increased our prices, despite the price of gas, electricity and location. Our prices remain the same”, insists the saleswoman.
A little further on, Pascal, a chichi seller, is rather confident. “People still want to have fun. I think confinement has taught us that when there are good times to be had, you have to take them. People will always be able to get out a small budget to treat themselves.”
To fulfill this pleasure, Pascal bought more than 400 kg of flour and sugar to make chichis, “the best in the world”until December 30.
