Traders’ sales stagnated in September, the lockdown did not come until the end of October

“Internet sales grew in double-digit growth in all months of this year. On the other hand, sales of clothing and footwear stores rose year-on-year for the last time in January this year, and have been declining year-on-year since then. Revenues from the sale and repair of motor vehicles are also lower this year than last year, “said Marie Boušková, head of the CZSO services statistics department.

Products for culture, sports and recreation were sold less than in September last year, by 3.0 percent. Sales of clothing and footwear retailers decreased by 18 percent.

Sales to non-specialized food stores fell by two percent, to specialized stores by four percent.

Month-on-month, sales to traders fell by 0.4 percent in September. For the entire third quarter, retail sales increased by one percent year on year.

July and August accounted for the dismantling of epidemiological measures. In September, there was more and more talk about the second wave, but the government did not resort to restrictions until later. Thus, sales could be negatively affected by fear, prudence or lower customer revenues.

“From next month, however, sales will fall again due to the reopening of a number of outlets, although the impact will be even more modest, as the closure did not occur until the end of the month,” added Jakub Seidler, chief economist at ING Bank.
