According to the Director General of the Alliance du Commerce Yohann Petiot, invited this evening on the set of BFM Business, several traders would be ready to engage the responsibility of the State if the insurers do not play the game.
According to the latest figures from the Alliance du Commerce relayed by the cabinet of the Minister Delegate for Commerce, Olivia Grégoire, the turnover of the shops was up 4% over the first twelve days of the sales compared to the year. pass.
Thus, the riots and damage to shops do not seem to have affected the desire for sales. “We often hear that the sales periods are dead and no longer interest anyone, but in an inflationary period the price is a more than decisive criterion”, declared the Director General of the Alliance du Commerce Yohann Petiot on the set of BFM. Business.
If these figures seem encouraging, they are not really representative of the sector, in particular for the businesses most affected by the recent looting and damage that hit France at the start of the month. For Yohann Petiot, some traders would even be ready to turn against the State if the bill remains high despite the compensation.
The sinews of war: compensation
In a message sent to AFP this morning, Olivia Grégoire was delighted to see that “many businesses that had been [affectés] by the riots were able to reopen quickly and take advantage of the enthusiasm of these first two weeks”. At the same time, the latter also shared having “a very strong thought” for those who “will not be able to reopen for a little while” .
These businesses which are not lucky enough to be able to open immediately reap significant operating losses during this time. Problem: only one out of two businesses in France is currently covered against this type of risk. “Even those who are insured for operating losses are not sure of being compensated,” described Yohann Petiot, explaining that guarantees often work in the event of an administrative decision to close businesses.
If the government has demanded from insurers efforts to reduce “classic” deductibles covering theft, fire, broken glass or the looting of stocks, Yohann Petiot believes he wants to wait “to see what will be done concretely ”. For him, if insurers do not play the game, some traders would therefore be ready to engage the responsibility of the State.
Figures on the results of the balances to qualify
The figures presented at the midpoint of the sales seem encouraging for the entire sector, but they do not reflect the realities faced by the businesses most weakened by the context. Indeed, the data reported by the Alliance du Commerce only concern its 27,000 members: in other words, major clothing and footwear brands.
So what about the smaller businesses that have suffered looting of their stocks or closed their establishment to prevent new riots? Yohann Petiot admits that the most affected traders will have to “wait several days, even weeks before reopening”. This period would even sometimes be extended by certain insurers who preferred to estimate the overall damage after the potential overflows on July 14.
