Behind the vastness of outer space, it turns out to be home to thousands of trash orbiting around the earth. Seeing this condition, scientists are trying to clean up the “space junk”.
As reported in an article published by Futurism, a number of scientists are currently experimenting to clean up the trash using a “tractor beam” inspired by science fiction films.
Tractor beam is a term used to describe the sci-fi method used to tow objects over long distances. In the Star Trek movie, the tractor beam is used to pull and push objects in space without using physical contact.
In this experiment, scientists use a laser to create light pressure that can be used to push or pull objects in space. They hope this technology can be applied to direct and pull space junk towards a lower orbit so that it can burn up when it enters the Earth’s atmosphere.
Space junk is made up of a wide variety of objects, including the remains of inactive satellites, rocket debris, and other debris. These pieces can pose a serious threat if they hit a satellite operating in earth orbit.
Apart from using a tractor beam, scientists have also explored several other solutions. Some ideas include using space vehicles equipped with robotic arms to catch trash or using electric ion technology to propel space junk into lower orbits.
Although still in the experimental stage, this effort represents progress in handling space debris. If successful, this technology could help reduce the risk of collisions with space junk that could damage satellites and disrupt communications and navigation systems on earth.
