Tracking Multiple Variants: WHO Issues Alert on EG.5 Strain and Potential Risks

The World Health Organization (WHO) has announced that it is tracking multiple variants of the coronavirus, including the EG.5 strain that is spreading in the US and the UK.

“The WHO is currently tracking several variants of COVID-19, including EG.5, for which we are publishing a risk assessment today,” said WHO chief Tedros Ghebreyesus at a briefing in Geneva. “There remains the risk of the emergence of a more dangerous variant that could led to a sudden increase in cases and deaths”.

EG.5 is a subvariant of the highly infectious variant of the coronavirus – omicron.

Ghebreyesus announced a series of “standing recommendations” that are in effect for all countries from today, August 9, until April 30, 2025. The recommendations call on countries to continue publishing data on COVID-19, including related deaths, maintain vaccination programs and ensure equal access to safe and effective vaccines.
