AIGLE – The International Cycling Union temporarily suspended the activities of track cyclist Christos Volikakis.

The reason is doping, the 35-year-old Greek had positive results from repeated tests of samples from the 2016 Olympic Games.

The UCI said Volikakis tested positive for the anabolic substance ligandrol in a sample taken on August 16, 2016. Samples from each Olympics are kept for ten years and re-analyzed regularly as part of the International Olympic Committee’s program.

The IOC routinely tests the samples taken using new methods. Volikakis is one of the first newly revealed athletes from Rio.

Volikakis is now threatened with disqualification from the Olympics in Paris or a complete ban. The Greek won medals at the World Championships and European Championships in track cycling, but he has not yet brought home a single valuable metal from his four participations in the Olympics. The information was brought by the AP agency.
