Track cycling world championships, Viviani silver in the elimination

Elia Viviani silver in the Elimination competition Ballerup 2024 Track Cycling World Championships. The host, the Dane Tobias Aagaard Hansen, won the world title and therefore beat the Italian in the final sprint. Third place and bronze medal for Canadian Dylan Bibic. The one won today by the Veronese pistard is the fourth consecutive world medal in this specialty, after the gold medals in 2021 and 2022 and the bronze last year in Glasgow. “I ran well, I had the Olympic downgrading in my head a bit and so I was a bit scared which led me to always run in the lead. But the truth is that I had the legs for second place, because the Dane he started in the lead and I wasn’t able to overtake him. Then when you see that you can’t, you give up because he had a superior sprint anyway. I wasn’t brilliant in the last sprint – he adds – because my head was brilliant for thinking but my legs weren’t to respond.” But the balance is still positive, he underlines, given that “in the elimination in the last four world championships for me there were two jerseys (rainbow ed.), a bronze and a silver”.

For Viviani, 35 years old, this is the ninth career world medal on the track. The Veronese also competing in Madison, paired with Simone Consonni, finished in 7th place. For Italy there are four medals in the Danish velodrome: Milan’s gold in the Pursuit, Consonni’s silver in the Omnium and Viviani’s in the Elimination and the bronze of the women’s quartet in the Pursuit.
