Traces of terrorism: Umar Patek, convicted of the Bali I bombing, just released on parole

Surabaya

Hisham bin Alizein alias Umar Patek, a convict convicted of the Bali I bombing, received parole (PB). Umar Patek was released from Surabaya Class I Prison in Porong, Sidoarjo on Wednesday (7/12).

So who and what role did they play in the first Bali bombing? Here is a piece of history.

Patek was one of the perpetrators of the first Bali bombing on October 12, 2002 at the Sari Club and Paddy’s Bar in Kuta. In the crash that killed 202 people, the man from Pemalang, Central Java played a role in preparing and assembling bombs.

After the devastating bombing of Bali, Patek became sought after by the Philippines, Australia and the United States. His ability to assemble high-explosive bombs makes him a prime target. His head even awarded 1 million dollars from the US government.

The traces of Patek’s acts of terrorism are not limited to the Bali bombings. It is recorded that he was the commandant of Jemaah Islamiyah Training Camp in Mindanao, Philippines. He is also a reliable bomb assembly instructor. Noordin M Top, successfully crippled by Densus 88 in 2009, was one of his students.

But catching Umar Patek has never been easy. Because he’s known as slippery as an eel. After the first Bali bombing, he even fled to Jakarta and moved from one country to another. As late as 2011, it was announced that Patek had been arrested by the security forces in Pakistan.

Patek was reportedly arrested on March 2, 2011. He was then flown back to Indonesia and tried in the West Jakarta District Court. In 2012, the judge sentenced him to 20 years in prison.

In March 2012 Patek was transferred from Mako Brimob Kelapa Dua Jakarta to Surabaya Class I Prison in Porong, Sidoarjo. The reason for the transfer is because the current condition of the Mobile Brigade Command is already overloaded.

On 16 August 2022, the East Java Ministry of Law and Human Rights announced that Umar had the opportunity to get parole (PB). This is due to the renunciation of independence of the Republic of Indonesia on August 17, 2022.

Patek’s probation day finally arrived on Wednesday (7/12). The Directorate General of Corrections announced that Patek has been granted probation.

“Today, December 7, 2022, Hisham bin Alizein Alias Umar Patek was released from Surabaya Class I Jail, with parole program and as of today changed his status from convict to Bapas Surabaya Prison Client,” said the director general of public relations. and Protocol Coordinator Rika Aprianti in the press release received detikJatim.

Even though he was released, Patek had to go through a mentorship program. This program runs until 2030. “It is mandatory to take part in the mentoring program until April 29, 2030,” explained Rika.

Rika explained that Patek’s conditional release (PB) was due to it meeting a number of specified conditions. One of them served 2/3 of his prison sentence.

“The PB program that is given is a conditional entitlement that is given to all inmates who have met the administrative and substantive requirements, including: having served 2/3 of their sentence,” he explained.

During his detention, Patek was also judged to be well behaved. Not only that, he also followed the construction program and swore allegiance to the NKRI.

“Behaving well, it followed the construction schedule and showed a reduction in risk as stated in the law No. 22 year 2022 on prisons,” said Rika.
