Trabuco Canyon Mass Shooting Leaves Three Dead and Several Injured
TRABUCO CANYON, Calif. – The names of the three victims who lost their lives in the tragic mass shooting at Cook’s Corner bar in Trabuco Canyon have been released. Tonya Clark, 49, of Scottsdale, Ariz., Glen Sprowl Jr., 53, of Stanton, and John Leehey, 67, of Irvine were all pronounced dead at the scene.
The Orange County Sheriff’s Department Coroner Division confirmed their identities and notified their next of kin before releasing the names on Friday afternoon. The shooting took place on Thursday evening, and the gunman, retired police sergeant John Snowling, was shot and killed by responding sheriff’s deputies.
Snowling also wounded six people in the shooting, including his estranged wife Marie. Among the injured were two members of the band M Street, who were performing on stage when Snowling entered the bar and opened fire with a gun in each hand.
Bass player Dave Stretch, who was wounded in the hip, described the surreal scene as Snowling began shooting. Stretch initially struggled to comprehend what was happening as he continued to play bass on stage. However, the horror quickly set in when he felt a bullet strike his hip.
Stretch recalled the confusion and terror that ensued in the bar. He first ran outside but heard gunfire, prompting him to seek shelter back inside. At one point, he even picked up a barstool, prepared to defend himself and others if the shooter returned.
Tonya Clark, a friend of Marie Snowling who was dining with her at Cook’s Corner that night, was also shot by John Snowling. Investigators believe that Snowling first targeted his estranged wife before turning his aim towards Clark. Another victim was a man who confronted the shooter in the parking lot outside the bar.
A prayer vigil was held on Friday night at Saddleback Church in Lake Forest to support the impacted families. As for the injured, two patients were initially listed in critical condition at Providence Mission Hospital in Mission Viejo. An adult male who was shot in the chest and an adult female who was stabilized were transferred to UCI Medical Center in Orange. Four adult male patients with minor injuries have since been released, while one underwent surgery for a bullet wound to the arm and is currently recovering.
The Trabuco Canyon community is left in shock and mourning as they come to terms with the devastating loss of three lives and the injuries sustained by others in this senseless act of violence.
