Toyota’s Response to New Chinese Car Brands at GIIAS 2023 Exhibition in Jakarta

The GIIAS 2023 exhibition will be invaded by a number of new brands from China. Brands from the Bamboo Curtain country will challenge brands from Japan and South Korea. How does Toyota respond as a Japanese brand that is the market leader in Indonesia?

For information, the Association of Indonesian Automotive Industries (Gaikindo) has confirmed the presence of several new brands from China at GIIAS 2023. The brands from the Bamboo Curtain country include Haval, Ora, Tank and Neta.

The three names mentioned at the beginning (Haval, Ora, Tank) are car brands that are members of the Great Wall Motor (GWM) conglomerate. Then Neta is a crossover-style electric car brand produced by Hozon Auto New Energy Automobile.


So, in total there will be 7 Chinese brands participating in the annual world-scale auto exhibition. Previously, there were three Chinese car brands that existed in Indonesia, namely Wuling, DFSK, and most recently Chery.

Toyota Indonesia positively welcomes the presence of newcomer brands from China at this year’s GIIAS exhibition. According to TAM (Toyota-Astra Motor) Head of Interactive Communication Department Dimas Azka, the presence of Chinese brands will have a good impact on the climate of the automotive industry in Indonesia.

“That’s good. It means that the market potential is getting bigger. Because the new choices mean that those who enter realize that the market potential in Indonesia is still large. For those who already have, there were only one or two choices before, now there are more and more. So on a macro basis it’s really good , because people will be offered more and more choices. We hope the market will grow,” said Dimas when met by detikOto in BSD City, Tangerang, Thursday (15/6/2023).

In addition, according to Dimas, the ratio of car ownership in Indonesia is still quite low. With so many car brands available on the market, it is hoped that more and more consumers will be interested in buying cars, so that the ratio of equity ownership in the country can increase.

“Our mobility level is still low, 99:1,000 (99 per 1,000 population), meaning that the potential is still great. The hope is that with many (brands) entering, the market will increase,” said Dimas.
