Last weekend saw the famous Le Mans 24 Hours endurance race, which is one of the most prestigious car races in the world. Le Mans and other endurance competitions are also gradually moving in the direction of electrification, but the capabilities of electric cars at the moment are still not completely suitable for such competitions – limited distance traveled on a single charge, large battery weight, as well as a relatively long charging time. Here on the scene is Toyota, which has come up with a hydrogen racing car concept, which is powered by hydrogen.
The concept was created by Toyota’s GR racing division and is named the ‘GR H2 Racing Concept’. The basic idea of this concept is to create a car specifically for Le Mans and other similar races, and the big idea is also clear – it is an emission-free car that spends more time on the track and less time filling up in the pits.
Toyota hasn’t revealed more details about the car or when we’ll actually see it on the racetrack. Company representatives explain that this car is built “for racing in the future” and we can safely say that the manufacturer will make various improvements before this car participates in endurance races.
Such a statement from Toyota generally comes at an interesting moment – along with the changes in the company’s management, Toyota’s emphasis has also changed, that is, the manufacturer will put the greatest emphasis on the development of electric cars in the future, however, the new CEO Koji Sato wants to ensure that hydrogen is also kept as an alternative option.
