Toyota said it had sold 5.42 million vehicles worldwide in six months, including vehicles sold under the Daihatsu and Hino brands. Compared to last year, the automaker managed to sell 5.5% more cars.
The Japanese automaker said sales growth was achieved by increasing production capacity around the world.
By comparison, Volkswagen sold just 4.37 million vehicles in the first half of 2023, up 12.8% from the same period in 2022.
Toyota Group’s worldwide production increased by 10.3% to a record 5.63 million units. Its production outside of Japan also reached a record high of 3.53 million vehicles.
The company’s sales in its native Japanese market grew by 26.9% to 1.21 million vehicles. Interestingly, sales growth in foreign markets amounted to only 0.6% due to a slight drop in demand for cars in China. It is worth noting that thanks to the electric Lexus RZ, sales of Toyota electric vehicles increased more than five times and amounted to 46,171 units during the reporting period.
