Toyota will produce new city supermini in Cologne

Toyota will produce a new A-segment model, ie the smallest cars, at its Toyota Motor Manufacturing Czech Republic plant in Cologne. The company’s spokesman Tomáš Paroubek will announce the start of production, its expected volume and the name of the car in the future.

The new car will use the Toyota GA-B platform. Three small cars are produced in Cologne – Toyota Aygo, Peugeot 108 and Citroën C1, this year a larger Yaris model is also being added. The small Peugeot and Citroën will be discontinued in the near future, and according to information already available, it can be concluded that the announced new Cologne minivan will be the successor to the Aygo model.

“We are convinced that this model will make a significant contribution to Toyota’s growth in the European market – this is fully in line with our involvement in the region. At the same time, it will be an affordable car that will bring segment A customers to our brand. It will be manufactured on the same platform as Yaris and Yaris Cross, which will bring us economies of scale – this aspect is crucial for small car production, ”said Toyota Motor Europe Executive Vice President Marvin Cook.

The company employs about 2,500 people in Cologne, last year on April 1 it started recruiting new employees for the production of the Yaris model, it wants to hire up to 1,000 employees. It represents one of the largest exporters in the Czech Republic and at the same time the largest employer in the Kolín region. According to the Association of the Automotive Industry, the production of cars at the Kolín car manufacturer fell by 26.4 percent to 147,865 cars last year.
