Toyota Unveils Prototype of Hydrogen-Powered Hilux Pickup Truck: Plans to Build 10 By Year’s End

Japanese automaker Toyota has demonstrated the first prototype of a hydrogen-powered Hilux pickup truck. The car was developed in cooperation with several partners, also attracting funding from the British government. Toyota plans to build 10 such hydrogen Hiluxes by the end of this year.

It partly adopts the hydrogen fuel cell system used in the Toyota Mirai, and the manufacturer estimates that the car will be able to travel about 480-490 kilometers between fill-ups. The good thing about hydrogen is that these numbers don’t change much with the weather. The images published by the manufacturer show that the hydrogen tanks are located in the middle of the machine, approximately under the cab. Hydrogen fuel cell parts are found in the front of the car, where the internal combustion engine is usually located.

As previously mentioned, Toyota plans to build 10 prototypes that will undergo an intensive test program as the manufacturer investigates whether such a hydrogen Hilux matches what customers expect from a Hilux. Toyota will test safety aspects, vehicle performance, practicality to better understand the risks and potential opportunities of a hydrogen-powered pickup truck.
