Toyota tries to resurrect diesel with hybrid – Auto World

The engine diesel he hasn’t had the best decade of his life and doesn’t have a great future ahead of him. After the Dieselgate scandal, which particularly involved the Volkswagen Group, and after the start of the crusade against harmful emissions, this type of engine does not seem to be in the plans of the majority of manufacturers. Unless it’s integrated into a very efficient hybrid.

Toyota could try, and there are some clues that would lead to the indiscretion of a hybrid diesel engine to be fitted to the cars on offer in the United States (pickup) and commercial vehicles. First of all, on July 26, Toyota USA released a video about the diesel engine, explaining how it works. Nothing strange, except that there is currently no diesel offer from the brand in North America. So why publish it? For some American sites this means that if there is no diesel to buy now, then it will come shortly.

Although the idea of the hybrid diesel is not new, it could be an opportunity to extend its life in markets where strict measures on polluting emissions will not enter in the short term. It would also fit perfectly with the statements of top Toyota executives, not so convinced that electric is a currently sustainable solution without first supporting a hybrid transition. The only houses that have brought forward the diesel, in mild-hybrid format, are the German ones: Audi, Bmw, Mercedes. Toyota already has a long history of hybrid powertrains on its side, however.

According to Carscoops, the models capable of containing a diesel hybrid engine could be the Land Cruiser or the Hiace. Others, such as Gearpatrol and MotorTrend, suggest the Tundra pickup. The latter seems to be the most striking option, although Ford recently dropped the diesel option from the F-150 model list. The hybrid diesel solution is expected to find a market as plug-in and electric projects flock.
