The largest car manufacturer in the world – the Japanese “Toyota” – is not yet going to follow the path of “Volvo” and therefore does not yet plan to completely abandon the use of diesel engines in its cars.
At the same time, Henley admits that diesel engines need to be made much more economical and cites the recently presented “Toyota Hilux” pick-up truck with a hybrid power unit as an example, which also includes a 2.8-liter diesel engine that develops 204 horsepower. It’s coupled to a 48-volt starter-generator that delivers an additional 16 hp. Such a “Toyota” pickup with a belt drive starter-generator is 6-10 percent more economical than the standard version. In Australia, such a hybrid pickup will cost from 60 thousand local dollars (36 thousand euros).
Toyota believes synthetic fuels and hydrogen are the future, but electric cars are considered “overrated” by the world’s largest automaker. Previously, the head of the company, Akio Toyoda, announced an ambitious project for the development of new power units of the traditional type and stated that the realization of 100 percent electric cars in the world will never exceed 30 percent of the total volume, moreover, he predicts such a result regardless of technological achievements in the field of electric cars. The remaining 70% of the new car market, according to Toyoda, will be divided between gasoline and diesel models, as well as hybrids and hydrogen fuel cars.
