The Toyota RAV4 Adventure has retained the hybrid drive combining a surprisingly large 2.5-liter four-cylinder gasoline engine with hybrid technology. The system reaches a maximum output of 222 horsepower and is connected to a stepless automatic transmission e-CVT. The electric motor on the rear axle is involved in the action quite often, most often during starts or in situations where not much power is needed. If the driver wants, he can switch to electric mode using a button on the center console. According to our experience, it is possible to drive completely emission-free up to 5 kilometers if the battery is fully charged.

Recharging took place either through recuperation or through the gasoline engine. The latter itself is quite noisy, especially at higher revs due to the continuously variable transmission. But as soon as the driver eases his foot on the gas, the four-cylinder quiets down again and you don’t even know about it. The same goes for transitions between individual drives. On the other hand, 222 horses under the hood makes a lot of sense. Acceleration from a standstill is unexpectedly dynamic thanks to the second electric motor. Not that the Toyota RAV4 Adventure tears up the asphalt, but it has plenty of power for everyday use. And even high highway speeds are not a problem.

The best thing about so-called full hybrids is, of course, fuel consumption. Despite the relatively large gasoline engine, the best-selling SUV in the adventure version manages to drive for 5.6 l/100 km, in combined traffic. In his district, i.e. in the city where the electric motor is engaged most often, it sips even only 4.3 liters per hundred kilometers. As a result, we drove more than 900 kilometers with the Toyota RAV4 Adventure on one tank of fuel.
