Toyota President Akio Toyoda has always had a negative attitude towards the development of pure electric vehicles. Recently, he once again emphasized at the group’s year-end press conference that the hasty transformation of electric vehicles will only bring negative effects, and he believes that politicians have not understood the actual situation.
Toyoda said at the meeting that those who support the full switch to electric vehicles did not fully consider the costs of the transformation process and the carbon emissions brought about by powering electric vehicles. Moreover, the current infrastructure simply cannot support a large number of electric vehicles on the road. He believes that if all cars in Japan become pure electric vehicles, there may be a power shortage in summer, and the required supporting infrastructure costs can reach 358 billion US dollars. Millions of people will be unemployed in the traditional automobile industry.
Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga earlier requested that the country stop selling gasoline vehicles in 2030, and only allow pure electric vehicles and plug-in hybrid vehicles to be sold. The Japanese government also announced that it will spend 8 billion yen to subsidize electric vehicles and purchase pure electric vehicles. The maximum subsidy reached 218,000 yen. Even so, Akio Toyoda believes that the government’s supporting policies for pure electric vehicles are inadequate, and that the timetable set is too hasty, and it is difficult for car manufacturers and related infrastructure to cooperate.
